James Dean is a 50’s actor so famous that he’s become a larger-than-life icon. But the Dean Dane plays in “Life” is just a conflicted youth on the brink of stardom, struggling with his desire to lose himself in his roles instead of all that other stuff. He’s moody, awkward, terrible at interviews, extremely sensitive, and even more stubborn. But Dennis Stock, the photographer who shot the photo essay the film is centered around, saw in him a talent and sincerity that the rest of the world had yet to discover. And by hanging out with him for a month he discovered that he’s less of a mysterious artist and more of a chubby bongo-drumming farmboy who dances like a chicken and likes reading poetry and comic books in funny voices.
